Experiencing the Solar Eclipse on Skjálfandi Bay

Yesterday was unlike any other day we've spent on Skjálfandi Bay.

The forecast for the 2026 solar eclipse in Húsavík wasn't particularly promising. Low clouds drifted across the bay throughout the morning, and we weren't sure how much of the eclipse we'd actually see.

Then, just when it mattered most, the sky opened.

As the Moon covered almost all of the Sun, the light changed in a way that's difficult to describe. The bay grew quieter, the colours softened, and for a few unforgettable moments, time seemed to slow down.

To make the experience even more special, humpback whales were feeding beneath the eclipsed Sun. Just as the eclipse reached its peak over Húsavík, one whale lifted its fluke before disappearing into the deep.

It wasn't totality here on Skjálfandi Bay, but that didn't make the moment any less extraordinary.

We spend hundreds of days on the water every year, yet every now and then nature gives us something completely unexpected. Yesterday was one of those days.
