A Breach and Humpbacks Everywhere!

Skjálfandi Bay was absolutely full of humpback whales today, giving us one of the most exciting days of our spring season so far.

Morning Tour

Our morning tour encountered seven humpback whales, with even more visible around the bay. Our guide estimated that there were at least ten humpbacks in Skjálfandi Bay.

And it wasn't only the number of whales that made the morning special.

We saw tail slapping, pectoral-fin slapping and even a full breach, when a humpback launched its body out of the water before crashing back into the sea.

With humpbacks appearing in different parts of the bay, there was certainly plenty to watch!

Just before returning to Húsavík, we also spotted a minke whale, adding a second whale species to an already incredible morning on the bay.

Afternoon Tour

When we returned to Skjálfandi Bay in the afternoon, the humpbacks were still around.

This time we encountered five humpback whales — another excellent tour, but a different experience from the highly active morning encounter.

Days like May 9 show perfectly why wildlife watching can change so much within just a few hours. Morning and afternoon were spent on the same bay on the same day, yet the number of whales we encountered and their behaviour were different.

What an incredible spring day in Húsavík.
