Orcas in Skjálfandi Bay!
Today brought a very special early-season encounter on Skjálfandi Bay: orcas!
The orcas were spotted far north in the bay, and we made our way towards them to see if we could catch a glimpse of these occasional visitors to our waters. We were lucky enough to encounter a group of four orcas, including two impressive mature males.
Orcas, also known as killer whales, can be seen around Iceland throughout the year, but encounters with them in Skjálfandi Bay are relatively uncommon. That makes days like this particularly exciting for both our guests and crew.
After several quieter early-season tours, seeing four orcas on April 3 was certainly a memorable way to welcome the new month.
This is exactly why we keep our Ocean Journal: every departure onto the bay can tell a completely different story.
