Three Whale Species in Skjálfandi Bay

Three different whale species made an appearance during our May 3 whale watching tour from Húsavík, although some proved much easier to observe than others.

We encountered one humpback whale, one minke whale and signs of a blue whale during our search of Skjálfandi Bay.

The humpback gave us a reasonable encounter, while we had one particularly good look at the minke whale. The blue whale was much more elusive. We spotted its blow in the distance, but didn't manage to get a good look at the whale itself.

That's often the reality of whale watching in the wild. Simply knowing a whale is nearby doesn't necessarily mean it will give us a clear view at the surface.

Still, having a humpback, minke and blue whale in the bay made for an interesting start to May and another reminder of the variety of whales that can visit Skjálfandi Bay.
